Session proposals for the annual Write on the Sound writers' conference are accepted throughout the year. To be considered for the 2017 conference (October 6, 7 and 8), please review the following information and application instructions.

Write on the Sound (WOTS) is a small, high quality, affordable three-day conference focused on the craft of writing. Established in 1986 by the City of Edmonds Arts Commission, WOTS is held the first full weekend in October in Edmonds WA. It offers a variety of workshops and panel discussions focused on craft for all writing levels and interests. The conference provides an opportunity to explore techniques in prose and poetry, including tools to address point of view, voice, story structure and character development, and sessions on building platform, marketing plans and publishing opportunities.

Special features include Friday full and half-day workshops, one-on-one manuscript critique appointments, a writing contest for conference registrants, on-site bookshop, book signing reception open to the public, a keynote address, community sponsored special events, and plenty of opportunity to network with attendees and other presenters.

Conference registration is limited to approximately 275 attendees. Sessions range from 20 to 80 attendees, depending on the schedule and classroom size. Friday half-day workshops are approximately 3.5 hours. Saturday and Sunday sessions are 75 minutes.

NOTE:WOTS does not feature a trade show hall, or offer appointments with agents and publishers.

Applications are reviewed December 1 through March 31  by the WOTS Steering Committee and Edmonds Arts Commission Staff. Deadline for Friday half-day or full-day session proposals is January 6, 2017. The deadline for all other Saturday/Sunday session proposals is March 31, 2017. Applications received from April 1st through the 15th may be considered for the current year's conference, but it is not guaranteed. Applications received after April 15th will be considered for the following year.

The WOTS attendee looks for practical tips, best practices and strategies they can immediately use to improve their writing skills, as well as up-to-date insight and information regarding the writing and publishing industry. The goal of the selection committee is to create a well-rounded conference program that offers a variety of "how to" sessions providing tips and best practices on writing craft in fiction, nonfiction and poetry, and information on specialty topics, genres, publising industry standards, and current trends.

Primary consideration is given to applicants with proven classroom or workshop teaching experience.

Saturday/Sunday sessions offering brief writing exercises are encouraged, but due to limited session time (75 minutes), classroom size (approx. 40-80) and set up (lecture style), sessions focused on writing exercises will not be given primary consideration.

Friday sessions are approximately 20-50 attendees and classroom style set up. Friday half-day sessions are 3.5 hours with at least one 15-20 minute break. Full day session is 9:30am - 5:00pm, with one hour break for lunch, one morning 15-20 minute break and one afternoon 15-20 minute break.

The Saturday/Sunday presenter honorarium for 2016 was $145. The rate may change. Friday half and full-day session honoraria vary. Small travel stipends may be available. Overnight accommodations are not included, but a special conference rate and room block is reserved for faculty at Best Western Plus/Edmonds Harbor Inn.
