Dynamic Dialogue and the Art of Subtext

Susan V. Meyers

Craft: Fiction

Do you want to liven up your dialogue? It might surprise you to learn that the most important things aren’t necessarily what’s said, but what’s not. This class introduces you to the art of subtext: those implied messages that give invisible life to the things we say.

Rookie Mistakes

Michelle Barker

Craft/Publishing: Fiction

Are you struggling to find a publisher for your novel? Maybe you’re making some rookie mistakes in your writing. Or maybe it’s the submission process that’s causing the problem. In this workshop attendees will learn how to spot some common errors, correct them, and make their submissions shine.

The Magazine Story from Story Idea to Publication

FACULTY CHANGE:Nicholas O'Connell

Craft/Publication: Nonfiction

Magazine stories are a wonderful way for both published and emerging writers to build a platform and earn a paycheck. In this session we’ll examine the elements of a successful magazine story, from story idea, scene, characterization, narrative arc, to research, revision techniques, pitch and proposals, finding editors and contracts..

Cultural Authenticity of Characters and Settings

Bharti Kirchner

Craft: All Genres

How do you bring authenticity to characters or settings that might be foreign to you, be it a novel or memoir? When should you or should you not make use of ethnic characters and foreign settings? Do you necessarily have to travel abroad? Examples from published fictions and lecture-discussions will clarify these questions. In the classroom, we will each come up with one such character and build a few characteristics. The result will be improved skill in fleshing out characters, no matter what nationality they belong to.
